{DIY} Bird Nest Necklace Tutorial

I was searching high and low for the perfect Mother's Day gift.  I wanted to give a homemade gifts, since they are the best (at least in my opinion).  I recalled seeing several versions of these bird nest necklaces on etsy several months ago, so I set out to make some of my own.

Please forgive my lighting in this picture.  By the time I finished these, there was no more natural light and I had to get them wrapped.  I should mention that these are very simple.  I only know some basic jewelry techniques, but anyone can make these.

Supplied Needed:
  • Pliers (In all reality a pair of needle nose pliers is really all you need.  If you use 24 gauge wire, a pair of scissors could easily cut it)
  • Jump ring
  • Wire (I used 24 gauge)
  • Chain
  • Beads (I used pearls)

Start by sliding the beads on to the wire.

Continue by making a circle and twisting the wire, like the picture above.

Twist the rest of the wire until the end used to string the beads has run out.

Start wrapping the wire around the beads until you've reached your desired look and size.

If all goes well, you should end up with something that looks like this.  Using some of the extra wire around the edge, fasten a jump ring and thread through the chain.  I ended up making three of these necklaces and each one ended up looking different.

I used pearls for the ones I made for my mom and grandma and birthstones of the hubs and his siblings for my mother-in-law.  I found the more beads included in these nests, the more challenging it was to make (Ironic?  I think not). I gave these away as Mother's Day gifts, but they would make a great gift for any occasion!
